Alumnus named outstanding young ophthalmologist

Ravi R. Patel, M.D. ‘02, received the Michael R. Redmond, M.D., Outstanding Young Ophthalmologist Award from the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, the preeminent professional association for medical and osteopathic physicians who specialize in vision care.
The annual award recognizes a Florida-based ophthalmologist younger than 40 years old who has demonstrated organizational leadership, service, competence and devotion to the high ethical and professional standards of the FSO.
Patel also was named the UF College of Medicine’s Outstanding Young Alumnus for 2014. He earned his medical degree from the UF College of Medicine and then was accepted into UF’s competitive ophthalmology residency program. He completed a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Shiley Eye Center at the University of California San Diego, where he also served as a clinical instructor.
Patel returned to his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, to open his ophthalmology practice after working with the NY Laser Group and teaching surgical residents at Cornell University.
Patel is the current president of the Duval County Society of Ophthalmology. He is also an FSO board member as well as member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
